A group of three powerhouse female musicians, The Firey String Sistas infuse world, global funk, ‘head bopping’ soul and jazz rhythms into a unique sound for violin, cello, bass, piano and percussion. Featuring founder, Nioka Workman (bassist, Reggie Workman’s daughter), Marlene Rice, and Mala Waldron (daughter of the late pianist/composer Mal Waldron), the ‘Sistas’ core sound is a cross pollination and amplification of women’s voices. Celebrating family traditions as well as addressing the cultural realities of our times (e.g. the pandemic), their fresh and innovative sound is inspiring future generations. Their debut CD, That’s What She Said, received overwhelming acclaim, with Raul da Gama of Jazz daGama exclaiming, “….there’s enough energy in Firey String Sistas to fire up a constellation…. deeply personal, naturally expressive playing…” The ‘Sistas’ are currently recording their highly- anticipated sophomore album, co-produced by Workman, which will feature songs dedicated to Maxine Waters, Michelle Obama and Mal Waldon, and which will feature several guest artists. Nioka Workman is an artist, composer, curator, and producer in the areas of dance, theater, music and film. Her arrangements/string features have been nominated for a Grammy and she has been part of an ongoing project by nia love – g1 (HOST):LOSTATSEA – which, in 2020, received a Bessie Award for music/sound design. Her musical imprint can be heard on a number of CDs with Steve Coleman, Greg Osby and India Arie. Violinist Marlene Rice, who has traveled the world, performing in Japan, Europe, Central and South America and beyond, is currently a teaching artist-in-residence and string department director at the Cecily Tyson School of Music. Mala Waldron earned a B.A. degree from SUNY Old Westbury where she studied jazz piano, voice & composition and her 2006 release, Always There, was named one of Jazz USA’s top 10. She appeared in the documentary, “The Girls in the Band” and tours regularly in Europe and Asia. She also recorded her album, He’s My Father, with her father Mal Waldron. Joining the ‘Sistas’ are bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Lucianna Padmore.
