Stephane Wrembel Band
One of the most highly regarded guitarists in the world specializing in the style of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt, Stephane Wrembel, has been called “perhaps the most creative improviser in Gypsy jazz today” by the New York Times. He was born in Fountainebleau, France, and learned his craft traveling the French countryside. Since graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, he has enjoyed a remarkable career including touring the world, releasing 17 albums under his name and the nom de plume, The Django Experiment, and his original compositions have been featured in Woody Allen films, including Midnight in Paris, which received the Grammy for “Best Compilation Soundtrack,” Vicky Cristina Barcelona (“Big Brother”) and Rifkin’s Festival (original score). Last heard at Outpost in 2012, Wrembel was selected by award-winning composer/producer Hans Zimmer to perform that same year at the Academy Awards as part of his “All Star Band” which also featured Esperanza Spalding, Pharrell, and Shelia E. He recorded Gypsy Rumble and toured nationally with famed mandolinist/composer David Grisman and has opened or performed with Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Medeski Martin & Wood, Me’shell Ndegeocello, John Schofield, and many others. In 2019, Wrembel released the highly regarded Django L’Impressionniste, featuring 17 of Reinhardt’s preludes for solo guitar, followed by a book of his transcriptions in 2021. He is the only guitarist in the world to perform these 17 preludes in their entirety. His most recent release, Django New Orleans (May 2023) features his 9 piece, NYC-based specialty group of the same name, and since 2023, he has produced the Django a Gogo Festival, which brings together some of the finest musicians in the world. Joining Wrembel is his world-class band featuring Josh Kaye, guitar; Ari Folman-Cohen, bass; and Nick Anderson, drums.
