Fred Sturm Solo Piano Recital & CD Release
Local pianist Fred Sturm recently completed a new CD, En Clave, featuring all the solo piano music of Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. Márquez grew up in a mariachi family, and is best known for his music based on popular jazz-related forms, particularly his Danzon #2 for symphony orchestra. The CD includes the premier recording of his early work En Clave, as well as Días de Mar y Rio and Solo Rumores. Also featured on the CD are two pieces by Federico Ibarra, Sonata 7 (which Ibarra dedicated to Sturm) and La Aniquilación de un Sueño (Annihilation of a Dream), written in 2019. This brings to completion Sturm’s recording of all of Ibarra’s works for solo piano. The CD is rounded out with three pieces by three additional living composers, Miguel del Águila’s Toccata, Mario Carro’s Impromptu, and Alejandro Rutty’s Qualia. Fred Sturm has performed regularly at the Outpost for many years (since the days of the original Morningside Drive venue), presenting music mostly by Latin American and Spanish composers. He is semi-retired from his career as a piano technician (he rebuilt and services the pianos at the Outpost) and is continuing to explore, perform and record music that excites him. He has previously released six CDs, including Brazilian Soul (all Villa-Lobos) and Piano Music of Federico Ibarra.
